Official IRC Channel - #reddit-sysadmin on Official Discord -. One of the arguments I've heard used to justify antivirus on Macs, is that it's part of a complete protection solution. Meaning that a Mac could still be an entrance point for something. For example, you plug in a flash drive, copy stuff off.
It doesn't have anything on it that would effect a Mac. For you copy that up to a network server, and someone on a PC runs something there, and now they are infected with something. So in this case, the Mac didn't get infected, but it's a carrier. Now this does fall into the 'Common Sense v2017', but again, it's something I've heard to justify it in the past. I'd love to say I am invulnerable to social engineering, but that would be a lie. I was fooled by the Melissa worm in 1999.
For my defense, it claimed to be coming to me from one of my employees with very poor English, so the broken language of the virus actually increased its believability and led me to lower my guard. I don't believe a reasonably competent Mac user can be infected by a virus.
Apple is more complacent than I would like about responding to security vulnerabilities. As for gullible users, the only way to protect them is to either lock them into an OS like iOS, or disable local administrator privileges.
